I joined FenestraPro’s team as someone very intrigued in sustainability and optimization, but also lacking specific experience in BIM. This led to my work with the group being extremely educational and rewarding.

With BIM and design constantly changing how they look, I quickly found how important it is for FenestraPro to maintain its stride. As a mechanical engineering intern, I collected data for the team daily, providing the company tools to continue developing alongside the industry. This data collection involved creating entry-level models of buildings for energy analysis, comparing the methodologies taken by different software providers, and testing FenestraPro’s own products to ensure no bugs were found or left unfixed. Within the seven-week internship, I gained experience in a multitude of software, engines, and platforms that I had never used prior.

With data collection having been such an important role in my internship, the communication of this data was just as prominent. My coworkers and I worked together with the data we had to form analysis, and eventually decide on an approach towards a solution to what we were working on. With the easy availability that comes with virtual connection, the team connected whenever necessary, whether this included a quick spontaneous call or scheduled weekly meetings.

As much as I enjoyed the technical responsibilities that came with my internship, my favorite aspect of the work was most definitely our team’s communication and collaboration. Being exposed to the different opinions and thought processes of each of my coworkers, then using these differences to find a common solution was the most valuable experience I gained from my internship.

My work with FenestraPro has encouraged personal growth in a variety of areas, leaving me with many takeaways. With each project, I expanded my technical strengths, applied social skills in a welcoming environment, and showcased my growing interest in improving the world we live in today.
